A classic and refreshing drink from the Indian subcontinent, perfectly balancing sweet, salty, and sour flavors to create the ultimate thirst-quencher.

Why it's healthy

Nimbu Pani is an excellent source of hydration, crucial for all bodily functions. The primary ingredient, lemon juice, is rich in Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that supports the immune system and enhances iron absorption from plant-based foods. The addition of black salt provides essential electrolytes like sodium and chloride, which are vital for maintaining fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contraction, especially important in hot climates where these minerals are lost through sweat. While it contains sugar for energy, its core benefits lie in its ability to effectively rehydrate and replenish the body with vital nutrients.

Ingredients

  • 1 large lemon (about 3 tbsp juice)
  • 250 ml chilled water
  • 2 tsp sugar, or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp black salt (kala namak)
  • A pinch of roasted cumin powder (optional)
  • 4-5 fresh mint leaves (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice into a tall glass, making sure to remove any seeds.
  2. Add the sugar, black salt, and roasted cumin powder (if using) to the glass.
  3. Pour in about 50 ml of water and stir vigorously until the sugar and salt are completely dissolved.
  4. Top up the glass with the remaining chilled water and stir again.
  5. Taste and adjust the sweetness or saltiness to your preference.
  6. Garnish with fresh mint leaves and serve immediately, with or without ice.
