Nannari Sharbat

Serves 1 · Prep 3 min · 128 calories per serving

A traditional South Indian summer cooler made from the aromatic roots of the Nannari plant, known for its refreshing and cooling properties.

Why it's healthy

Nannari Sharbat's health benefits are rooted in its primary ingredient, the Nannari root (Hemidesmus indicus), a staple in Ayurvedic medicine. It is traditionally acclaimed as a natural body coolant, helping to reduce body heat and prevent dehydration during hot weather. The root is also considered a diuretic, aiding in flushing toxins from the body, and a blood purifier. While the syrup base is high in sugar, the addition of fresh lemon juice provides a good dose of Vitamin C, an antioxidant that supports the immune system. Optional sabja (basil) seeds contribute soluble fiber, which aids digestion and promotes a feeling of fullness.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp Nannari syrup
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 200 ml chilled water or soda water
  • 1 tsp sabja seeds (basil seeds), soaked (optional)
  • Ice cubes, as needed

Instructions

  1. If using, soak the sabja seeds in 1/4 cup of water for 15-20 minutes until they swell and become gelatinous. Drain any excess water.
  2. In a tall glass, add the Nannari syrup and freshly squeezed lemon juice.
  3. Add the soaked sabja seeds to the glass.
  4. Pour in the chilled water or soda water.
  5. Stir everything well with a long spoon until the syrup is completely mixed.
  6. Add a few ice cubes.
  7. Serve immediately for a refreshing experience.
