Serves 1 · Prep 5 min · 55 calories per serving

A refreshing and savory yogurt-based drink from the Indian subcontinent, spiced with cumin, black salt, and fresh herbs, perfect for cooling down and aiding digestion.

Why it's healthy

Masala Chaach is a hydrating, low-calorie beverage beneficial for gut health. The primary ingredient, yogurt, is a rich source of probiotics, which support a healthy digestive system, and provides high-quality protein and calcium for bone health. Spices like roasted cumin are known to stimulate digestive enzymes, while ginger possesses anti-inflammatory properties. Black salt can help alleviate bloating. Being water-based, it effectively replenishes fluids and electrolytes lost in hot weather, making it a healthier alternative to sugary drinks. It's a natural, nutrient-dense way to cool the body and aid digestion simultaneously.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt (dahi)
  • 1 cup chilled water
  • 1/4 tsp roasted cumin powder
  • 1/4 tsp black salt (kala namak)
  • A pinch of regular salt, or to taste
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh cilantro (coriander leaves)
  • 1 tsp finely chopped fresh mint leaves
  • Optional: 1/4 inch ginger, grated
  • Optional: 1/4 green chili, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, add the plain yogurt and whisk thoroughly until it is smooth and free of lumps.
  2. Gradually pour in the chilled water while continuing to whisk to achieve a thin, uniform consistency.
  3. Add the roasted cumin powder, black salt, and regular salt. Stir well to combine.
  4. Stir in the finely chopped cilantro, mint leaves, and optional grated ginger and green chili.
  5. For a frothier texture, you can use an immersion blender or blend everything in a blender for 30 seconds.
  6. Pour into a glass and serve immediately, or chill further for 15-20 minutes for an even more refreshing drink.
