Khus Sharbat

Serves 1 · Prep 3 min · 90 calories per serving

A traditional Indian subcontinent summer cooler made from the earthy and aromatic roots of vetiver grass, known for its refreshing and cooling properties.

Why it's healthy

Khus Sharbat's primary health benefit is its exceptional cooling effect on the body, attributed to the vetiver root extract, making it ideal for hydration during hot weather. Vetiver root is traditionally known to contain trace minerals like iron, manganese, and zinc. While commercial syrup is high in sugar, this drink serves as a better alternative to caffeinated and artificially flavored carbonated beverages. The optional addition of lime juice provides a small boost of Vitamin C, an antioxidant that supports the immune system, while adding sabja (basil) seeds can contribute soluble fiber.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp Khus syrup
  • 1 cup chilled water
  • 1 tsp lime juice (optional)
  • 4-5 ice cubes
  • Mint leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Pour the khus syrup into a tall glass.
  2. Add the optional lime juice.
  3. Top with chilled water and stir until the syrup is fully dissolved.
  4. Add ice cubes to the glass.
  5. Garnish with fresh mint leaves and serve immediately.
