Serves 1 · Prep 2 min · Cook 9 min · 8 calories per serving

A simple, traditional Indian wellness drink made by simmering roasted cumin seeds in water, known for its digestive benefits.

Why it's healthy

Jeera Pani is a low-calorie hydrating beverage with significant health benefits derived from cumin seeds. Cumin is a rich source of iron, a crucial mineral for energy production and oxygen transport in the blood; a single serving can contribute a notable amount to your daily needs. The seeds contain an active compound called thymol, which stimulates the pancreas to produce digestive enzymes, aiding in the breakdown of fats and nutrients and improving overall digestion. Cumin is also packed with antioxidants that combat free radicals, reducing oxidative stress. Its anti-inflammatory properties may help soothe the digestive tract, making it a traditional remedy for bloating and indigestion.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
  • Optional: pinch of black salt (kala namak)
  • Optional: 1/2 tsp lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Lightly dry roast the cumin seeds in a small saucepan over low heat for about a minute until they become aromatic. Be careful not to burn them.
  2. Pour the water into the saucepan with the roasted cumin seeds.
  3. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 5-8 minutes. The water will turn a pale golden-brown color.
  4. Turn off the heat and strain the jeera pani into a cup using a fine-mesh sieve.
  5. If desired, stir in a pinch of black salt or a squeeze of lemon juice.
  6. Serve warm, preferably on an empty stomach in the morning or after a meal.
