Janmashtami Panchamrit

Serves 1 · Prep 4 min · 85 calories per serving

A sacred Hindu offering made from five nectars—milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and sugar—traditionally prepared for religious ceremonies like Janmashtami.

Why it's healthy

Panchamrit offers a concentration of nutrients in its small, traditional serving. The base of milk and yogurt provides high-quality protein and calcium, essential for bone health and muscle function. Yogurt also contributes beneficial probiotics that support a healthy gut microbiome. Ghee is a source of fat-soluble vitamins like A and E, along with butyric acid, which aids digestion. Honey provides readily available carbohydrates for energy and contains natural antioxidants. While it contains sugar, its consumption as a small portion of prasad makes it a nutrient-dense offering rather than a simple sweet.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp whole milk
  • 1 tbsp plain yogurt (curd)
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1/2 tsp ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 tsp powdered rock sugar (mishri) or raw sugar
  • 1-2 holy basil leaves (tulsi), optional
  • A pinch of saffron strands, optional

Instructions

  1. In a clean bowl, preferably silver, combine the milk and yogurt.
  2. Whisk gently until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.
  3. Add the ghee, honey, and powdered sugar to the bowl.
  4. Stir continuously until all the ingredients are well combined and the sugar has dissolved.
  5. If using, gently fold in the holy basil (tulsi) leaves and saffron strands.
  6. Let it sit for a few minutes for the flavors to meld before offering as prasad.
