Jaljeera

Serves 4 · Prep 5 min · 25 calories per serving

A refreshing and tangy Indian summer drink made with cumin, mint, and spices, known for its cooling and digestive properties.

Why it's healthy

Jaljeera is a hydrating, low-calorie beverage celebrated for its digestive benefits. The primary ingredient, cumin ('jeera'), contains compounds like cuminaldehyde that stimulate digestive enzymes, aiding nutrient absorption. Mint and ginger are known carminatives, helping to relieve gas and bloating. Black salt (kala namak), a key flavoring, is used in Ayurveda as a cooling spice and a mild laxative. Tamarind provides a tart flavor and is a source of antioxidants and polyphenols. Fresh herbs like mint and cilantro contribute vitamins A and C. As it's typically low in sugar, it's an excellent alternative to sugary sodas for hydration and digestive support.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves
  • 1 inch ginger, roughly chopped
  • 1 tbsp tamarind paste
  • 1.5 tsp roasted cumin powder
  • 1 tsp black salt (kala namak)
  • 1/2 tsp regular salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper powder
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 cups chilled water
  • Optional: 1 tsp sugar or jaggery powder

Instructions

  1. In a blender, combine mint leaves, cilantro leaves, ginger, and tamarind paste with about 1/4 cup of water.
  2. Blend until you have a smooth, fine paste.
  3. Transfer the paste to a large jug or pitcher.
  4. Add the roasted cumin powder, black salt, regular salt, black pepper powder, and lemon juice to the paste. Stir well to combine.
  5. Pour in the 2 cups of chilled water and mix everything thoroughly until the paste is fully dissolved.
  6. For a smoother drink, you can strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve.
  7. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and for the drink to get extra cold.
  8. To serve, pour into a glass, add a few ice cubes, and garnish with fresh mint leaves or crispy boondi.
