Garam Masala

Serves 20 · Prep 5 min · Cook 5 min · 8 calories per serving

A fragrant and warming Indian spice blend, essential for adding depth and flavor to various dishes.

Why it's healthy

Garam Masala is more than a flavoring; it's a blend of potent botanicals. Spices like cloves, cinnamon, and cardamom are rich in antioxidants, which combat cellular damage. Black pepper contains piperine, a compound known to enhance nutrient absorption and possess anti-inflammatory properties. Cumin and coriander are traditionally used to aid digestion by stimulating digestive enzymes. Cinnamon has been studied for its potential to help regulate blood sugar levels. While the amount used per serving is small, the regular inclusion of these spices contributes a diverse range of beneficial plant compounds and minerals like iron and manganese to the diet.

  • 3 tbsp coriander seeds
  • 1.5 tbsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp black peppercorns
  • 2 tsp whole cloves

  • 1/2 whole nutmeg
  • 1 star anise
