Chaas (Spiced Buttermilk)

Serves 1 · Prep 4 min · 85 calories per serving

A refreshing and savory yogurt-based drink from the Indian subcontinent, lightly spiced with roasted cumin and salt, perfect for cooling down and aiding digestion.

Why it's healthy

Chaas is a hydrating beverage rich in probiotics from yogurt, which support a healthy gut microbiome and aid digestion. It is an excellent source of calcium, essential for bone health, and provides B vitamins, particularly B12, crucial for energy metabolism and nerve function. The addition of spices like roasted cumin not only adds flavor but also has carminative properties, helping to relieve gas and bloating. Being low in calories and fat (especially when made with low-fat yogurt), it serves as a light, nutrient-dense drink that helps cool the body and replenish electrolytes lost through sweat.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 cup chilled water
  • 1/4 tsp roasted cumin powder
  • 1/4 tsp black salt (kala namak) or to taste
  • A pinch of regular salt (optional)
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro or mint leaves (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, add the plain yogurt and whisk it vigorously until it is completely smooth and free of lumps.
  2. Slowly pour in the chilled water while continuing to whisk to combine everything well.
  3. Add the roasted cumin powder, black salt, and regular salt (if using). Whisk again until the spices are fully incorporated.
  4. Stir in the chopped cilantro or mint leaves if you are using them.
  5. For a frothy texture, you can use an immersion blender for 20-30 seconds or pour the mixture back and forth between two glasses a few times.
  6. Serve immediately, chilled, or refrigerate for 30 minutes to let the flavors meld.
